SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 8
(By Senators Ross, Helmick, Hunter, Fanning, Schoonover,
Chafin, Jackson, Ball, Buckalew, Sprouse, Dittmar and Sharpe)
Honoring Dorothy I. MacConkey, President, Davis & Elkins College.
Whereas, Dorothy I. MacConkey has served as President of
Davis & Elkins College since 1984; and
Whereas, During her tenure the college has enjoyed numerous
improvements to its physical plant and educational facilities,
including, but not limited to, construction of a new library,
restoration of Halliehurst, Graceland and the Gatehouse,
conversion of Allen Hall to a conference center, remodeling of
five residence halls and the chapel, and current construction of
a new athletic and physical education academic complex; and
Whereas, Academic programs have been reviewed and
strengthened under President MacConkey's supervision, such that
the College was granted full accreditation by the North Central
Association of Colleges and Schools, the Nursing Department was
accredited by the National League of Nursing, and the William
James Center was recognized as a program of excellence by the
Consolidated Natural Gas Company Foundation; and
Whereas, President MacConkey has always given the highest priority to the students and their education, and more than 2,285
students have graduated from Davisd & Elkins College during her
years of service; and
Whereas, President MacConkey has dedicated herself to
community service at the local, regional and state levels as a
member of the Elkins Rotary Club and as a member of the governing
boards of the Mountain State Forest Festival, Davis Trust
Company, Black Diamond Girl Scout Council, Appalachian Mental
Health Center, West Virginia Children's Home Advisory Board, and
the Regional Jail Commission, and as President of the West
Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference; and
Whereas, At the national level, President MacConkey's
community service includes numerous positions with the North
Central Association, the American Council on Education, the
Council of Independent Colleges and the National Association of
Intercollegiate Athletics; and
Whereas, Dorothy I. MacConkey has demonstrated her loyalty
and service to the people of West Virginia; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:
That its members extend to Dorothy I. MacConkey, President
of Davis & Elkins College, its honor, respect and gratitude oin
behalf of the citizens of this honorable state; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the Senate is hereby
directed to forward a copy of this resolution to Dorothy I.
MacConkey, to the Commissioner of Education and the Arts, to the
Chancellor of the West Virginia State College System and to the
Mayor of Elkins, West Virginia.
